Overview

Gray Construction is seeking an Assistant Manager, Mechanical to support the Preconstruction Team.  This position will be based in the Lexington, KY Office.

Position Summary

 

The Assistant Mechanical Manager will play a key role in the pre-construction phase, helping to estimate project costs, coordinate bids with subcontractors, and ensure the feasibility of mechanical or plumbing systems. This position is ideal for professionals with a few years of experience who are looking to develop their technical expertise, communication skills, and business acumen in a dynamic environment.

Who we want… (Requirements)

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or chemical engineering (or related discipline) is preferred, with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Equivalent years of related experience will be considered in place of a technical degree.
  • Pursuit of an MBA or related business qualification is desirable.
  • Prior experience in construction estimating or project management is preferred but not required.
  • Mechanical Candidates – Experience with HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, process piping, ductwork, wastewater, process engineering, mechanical design, or construction management is preferred but not required.
  • Strong analytical abilities with attention to detail.
  • Travel less than 15%.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with estimating software is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

What we expect… (Essential Functions)

 

  • Cost Estimating:
    • Analyze historical data to prepare accurate cost estimates for mechanical components of projects.
    • Collaborate with senior managers to refine estimating processes and improve accuracy.
  • Subcontractor Coordination:
    • Engage with mechanical, plumbing or fire protection subcontractors to gather quotes, level bids, and assess capabilities.
    • Ensure subcontractor estimates align with project requirements and budget constraints.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain detailed records of estimates, communications, and project specifications.
    • Prepare and present reports on estimating activities and project status to senior management.
  • Project Management:
    • Assist in the preparation of project proposals and bids.
    • Support the transition from pre-construction to construction phases by providing necessary documentation and information.
  • Design
    • Influence and guide the design of new systems, buildings, and campuses.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Generally, normal office environment where noise level is moderate and temperature/humidity is controlled. Overtime may be required.
