Overview

The Project Engineer will play a key role in the pre-construction phase, helping to estimate project costs and coordinate bids with subcontractors.  This position is based out of our Birmingham, AL office.

What we expect

  • Supports preconstruction efforts on assigned pursuits and projects, assisting with estimating, quantity takeoffs, scope development, and pricing analysis under the direction of preconstruction leadership.
  • Develops accurate quantity takeoffs, pricing inputs, and estimate backup documentation consistent with defined assumptions and Gray standards.
  • Assists with the preparation of conceptual and detailed budgets, compiling data, documenting assumptions, and identifying questions or gaps for review.
  • Coordinates with internal teams as directed (including operations, design management, procurement, and scheduling) to support constructability, phasing, and pricing accuracy.
  • Assists with trade partner and vendor outreach and proposal reviews, helping confirm scope alignment and escalating risks or discrepancies.
  • Supports proposal development and preconstruction deliverables, including exhibits, narratives, scope matrices, and related documentation.
  • Participates in preconstruction meetings and reviews, preparing materials, documenting action items, and supporting assigned followup.
  • Learns and applies Gray’s preconstruction tools, processes, and best practices, incorporating feedback and lessons learned to improve performance over time.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Qualifications

Who we want

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; and a minimum of two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  • Proficient in standard business and pre-construction software tools, including document preparation, spreadsheets, email, and estimatingrelated applications.

  • Experience with large-scale, non-residential construction projects is preferred.

  • Must possess basic computer skills including the ability to utilize Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.), tablets and smartphones.

  • Should be an energetic, self-motivated individual who has a passion for collaboration and professional development.

  • Strong communication skills.

Generally, normal office environment where noise level is moderate and temperature/humidity is controlled. Overtime may be required. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities
